Police in Co Antrim are searching for a gang that shot dead a man in Ballymoney last night.

Brian McIlhagga, 42, who was a father of five, was shot outside a house at Riverview Park in the town shortly before 10.30pm.

Mr McIlhagga was dragged out of the house, beaten and shot in the leg in the front garden, where he later died.

PSNI chief inspector Michael Harvey, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was a brutal, sustained and vicious assault on this gentleman.

"This is a gentleman who has five children."

A 32-year-old woman was also in the house was assaulted and forced to lie on the kitchen floor while the shooting took place.

Her injuries are said to be not life-threatening.

Four children aged 13 and younger were in the house when the gang burst in.

The PSNI has appealed for anyone with information on the incident to come forward and a murder investigation is under way.

Neighbours said Mr McIlhagga had only recently moved into the property.

DUP MLA for North Antrim Mervyn Storey was at the scene this morning and said the community was shocked by the shooting.

Sinn Féin MLA Daithi McKay said the killers must be caught.

He said: "This murder is a terrible blow to the victim's family and my thoughts are with them as they come to terms with this dreadful news. Those behind the murder need to be taken off the streets."
