A 33-year-old woman has died after she was struck by a van in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal in the early hours of this morning.

The incident occurred on Main Street in the town at around 1.50am.

Sheena Stewart from Letterkenny was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was removed to the Shiel Hospital.

The driver of the van was uninjured.

The road had been closed for a technical examination but has since re-opened.

The death is the first road fatality of 2015 and comes as figures from the Road Safety Authority show that the numbers of people killed on the State's roads increased for a second consecutive year in 2014.
