An investigation is under way following the deaths of a husband and wife at their home in Cobh, Co Cork.

The couple, both of whom sustained fatal stab wounds, has been named locally as Michael Greaney (53) and Valerie Greaney (49).

They lived at O'Neill's Place, Carrigafoy in Cobh where the incident unfolded.

The couple operated a physiotherapy business in Cobh for the last ten years.

Gardaí were alerted by one of the couple's two daughters around 3.30pm.

When they arrived at the family's home, they found the husband and wife dead.

The eldest daughter, who also sustained stabbed wounds, is in a serious but stable condition at Cork University Hospital.

The youngest daughter, who raised the alarm, is described as being severely traumatised.

Post mortem examinations will be carried out in the morning, however, gardaí are treating what happened as a tragic family incident.

The house has been sealed off pending a technical examination.
