Four men and a woman have been arrested following a confrontation in east Cork, which resulted in two gardaí being hospitalised with serious injuries.

The altercation happened when a car initially failed to stop for gardaí on the outskirts of the village of Killeagh at around midnight last night.

A number of men attacked gardaí, hitting one with a rock causing him serious eye and head injuries.

The injured garda was taken to Cork University Hospital where he is being treated.

A second garda was also injured in the jaw and a garda car rammed.

The men made off in the direction of Youghal and rammed a second patrol car before heading towards Dungourney.

Another garda team spotted the men attempting to enter a property and there was another standoff.

A regional support team from Cork attended the scene and five people were subsequently arrested.

During the standoff gardaí were threatened with knives, sticks and other weapons.

The four men aged 18, 22, 25, 46 and a 27-year-old woman are being detained in Midleton, Cobh and Fermoy Garda Stations.

A number of weapons, a car and cash were recovered.

The five people arrested are expected to appear before Mallow District Court tomorrow morning.
