A 24-year-old Irishman has died in India. He was found unconscious in a budget hotel room in a suburb of Mumbai and rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Brendan Devenney, believed to be from Mullingar in Co Westmeath, was discovered by hotel staff in his room in the hotel in Sahar on Tuesday, a day after he landed in Mumbai.
It is understood he had been planning to travel to Goa.
Police are awaiting the report from a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
"It is too early to conclude whether there was any foul play. A probe will be initiated after the post-mortem," said Sahar senior police inspector Prashant Mardhe.
"An FIR will be registered if the post-mortem report shows the cause of death due to some other factor besides natural," he added.
Police are recording statements from hotel staff.
Mr Devenney's parents have been informed of his death.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance.
