A 54-year-old man has appeared at the District Court in Limerick charged in connection with the seizure of almost €1.5m in cash found buried in a bog near Castleconnell last December.

John Duffy, 54, of Shanabooly Road, Ballynanty, Limerick, is accused of possession of €1,494,430 at Portcrusha, Montpellier, Co Limerick, on 14 December 2013, knowing it was the proceeds of crime.

The cash was discovered by gardaí in a rural property after they had mounted a five month surveillance operation.

Some of the money was found buried in bag in the ground, while some was found in a container, which was located on the farmlands.

A mini-digger and a tumble drier, which was being used to dry the cash, were also discovered on the site.

The court heard that a book of evidence is being prepared and the case will be sent forward for trial to the Circuit Court.

Mr Duffy was remanded on bail to appear before the District Court on 14 January.
