Two men have been arrested and a number of weapons were discovered in an operation targeting dissident republicans in the Dublin area over the weekend.

The searches were the result of an ongoing intelligence-led investigation by the Garda Crime and Security section and the Special Detective Unit.

Premises in the Ballymun, East Wall and the Cloghran areas of Dublin were searched.

Two men in their 50s were detained and a number of semi automatic pistols, a sawn-off shotgun and an AK-47 assault rifle were discovered as part of the operation.

Gardaí also discovered bomb-making material at one of the locations where the assistance of the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was sought in order to render the area safe.

A controlled explosion was also carried out.

The scenes have been examined by the Garda Technical Bureau.

This operation was the latest in a number of seizures and arrests against dissident republicans this year.

A senior Garda detective at the scene described the latest seizures as very significant and a major setback against the criminal and subversive activities of dissident republicans.

The two men are being detained at Mountjoy and Coolock Garda stations.
