One of Ireland's best known contemporary artists, John Shinnors, was seriously injured in a road traffic accident in Limerick earlier today.

The 64-year-old was struck by a van on the M7 at the Roxboro slip road near the Maldon Hotel in Limerick this morning.

Mr Shinnors was trying to cross the road after his car had broken down in the area.

He was hit by a van driven by an off-duty garda and as a result, the Garda Ombudsman is carrying out an investigation into the incident.

Mr Shinnors suffered injuries to his legs and is in a serious but stable condition in hospital in Limerick.

A graduate of the Limerick School of Art and Design, Mr Shinnors has exhibited widely in Ireland and London.

Earlier this year, he curated a special exhibition titled "The Personal Choice" for Limerick City of Culture.

The personal collection consisted of 20 paintings of the work of some of the best known artist-graduates from the Limerick School of Art and Design.
