A man has been charged with the murder of his parents Kathleen and Jimmy Cuddihy in Carndonagh, Co Donegal.

Julian Cuddihy, 42, was charged at a special sitting in Ballyshannon District Court this evening.

Detective Garda Bernard Mullins gave evidence of arresting Mr Cuddihy at Buncrana Garda station at 5pm today.

He was charged with the murder on or about the 22 October at Churchtown, Carndonagh.

Det Mullins said the accused said he had no response when the first charge was put to him. 

Judge Kevin Kilraine remanded Mr Cuddihy in custody to Castlerea Prison to appear at a special sitting of Letterkenny court next Wednesday.

At the request of Mr Cuddihy's solicitor, Ray Lannon, he directed that the accused be psychiatrically assessed as soon as is practicable

Last night, the bodies of Kathleen Cuddihy, 73, and Jimmy Cuddihy, 77, were removed from their home following a preliminary examination at the scene by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy.

They were taken to the morgue at Letterkenny General Hospital, where Dr Cassidy is carrying out post-mortem examinations.

Mr Cuddihy was a retired school teacher and Mrs Cuddihy was a retired nurse.
