Nine people have been charged with public order offences after refusing to leave O'Connell Street in Dublin yesterday after a protest.

The gardaí had told 60 people who were blocking traffic with an unofficial sit-down that they needed to leave.

They were informed that they were in breach of the the Public Order Act but refused to move.

Six men and five women were arrested at the scene and taken to Store Street Garda Station.

There was no one injured and no property damaged during the operation.

Several thousand people had earlier attended water meter protests which passed off peacefully on O'Connell Street in Dublin city centre.
