A man has been charged with the murder of a female patient at a Waterford psychiatric hospital.

Paul Cuddihy, 36, with an address at St Otteran’s Hospital, John’s Hill, Waterford, appeared before Waterford District Court this evening in relation to the murder of Marie O’ Brien.

The 55-year-old mother of three died near a residential home on the grounds of St Otteran’s Hospital on Friday evening.

Det Sgt Donal Donohue said he formally arrested the defendant and charged him on 6 September.

Mr Cuddihy replied "no comment" in response to the charge, the court was told.

Barrister Tara Geoghegan, appearing in court on behalf of solicitor Hilary Delahunty, applied for a psychiatric assessment for the defendant.

She also applied for and was granted with free legal aid for Mr Cuddihy, whom she said had "no means at present."

Judge Kevin Staunton  directed that the defendant receive medical and psychiatric attention and remanded him in custody until next Tuesday.
