The death has occurred of Professor John Fitzpatrick, who was the lead scientific researcher at the Irish Cancer Society.

Prof Fitzpatrick was the first Head of Research at the Society, having taken up the position in January 2012, and he led a process of bringing together Irish and world experts to begin forming collaborative cancer research centres in Ireland.

Prior to his joining the society, Professor Fitzpatrick was Professor of Surgery and Consultant Urologist at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and University College Dublin.

He was also a former Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Urology International and was on the editorial board of 25 other Journals.

Prof Fitzpatrick was also a past president of the Irish Society of Urology and of the British Association of Urological Surgeons.

A respected clinician and scientist, he performed over 90 visiting professorships in the US and other countries worldwide.

He died suddenly yesterday morning.
