A man in his 20s has been arrested after a carjacking and assault on a pregnant woman in Dublin city centre this afternoon.

The driver of the car was putting money in a parking meter near Mountjoy Square at around 3pm.

Another man got into the car and drove off with the passenger, who is seven and a half months pregnant, still in the car.

A passing garda patrol saw the events unfold and followed the car.

It is understood the man tried to push the woman out of the moving car before finally stopping on Sean McDermott Street and running away.

When arrested, the man was found with a blood-filled syringe. He had also stolen the woman's phone, which was recovered.

He is being detained at Store Street Garda Station.

The woman, who is in her 30s, is receiving treatment for minor injuries at the Rotunda Hospital and will remain there overnight for observation.

An investigation is under way.
