A Fianna Fáil councillor and local election candidate is in a serious condition in hospital after falling ill near his home in Co Offaly.

Councillor Noel Bourke, 71, was discovered near his home at Killane, Edenderry at around 3.15am yesterday morning after suffering a suspected brain haemorrhage.

He is being treated in the intensive care unit at the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore.

Mr Bourke is one of the longest serving councillors with Offaly County Council.
