Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has said he had a "frank" meeting with Labour MEP Phil Prendergast today and he said he would go out canvassing with her.

Mr Gilmore and Ms Prendergast met at the launch of Labour's campaign to elect the German MEP Martin Schulz, as the next European Commission President.

Yesterday, Ms Prendergast called for Mr Gilmore to step down as party leader.

The Ireland South candidate said she was reflecting the views of "members of every level of the party" when she is calling for a change of leadership.

However, Mr Gilmore said he has no intention of stepping down as leader of the Labour Party.

Ms Prendergast said she had a "frank and cordial" meeting with Mr Gilmore.

She also said she stood over her comments yesterday and would canvass with Mr Gilmore during the European election campaign.
