A man has been arrested after breaching the perimeter of Leinster House while carrying a sword and a number of knives.

The man was detained on the plinth in front of Leinster House at about 4.30pm.

He was taken to Pearse Street Garda Station. Nobody was injured in the incident.

Minister of State for Research and Innovation Seán Sherlock said gardaí dealt swiftly with the man.

Speaking on RTÉ's Six One, Minister Sherlock, who witnessed the incident, said that but for the vigilance of gardaí, the man would have gained entry.

However, he said the man had been apprehended before reaching the revolving doors at the front of Leinster House.
