Two men have been arrested following an attempted robbery in Gorey, Co Wexford.

Two masked men entered Permanent TSB on Main Street between 12.45pm and 1pm, where they threatened staff and demanded cash.

One of the men was believed to be carrying a handgun.

Both men left empty-handed after a panic alarm was activated and fled the scene in a black Fiat Punto driven by a third person.

Gardaí pursued the raiders, who subsequently hijacked a Toyota Corolla, before attempting to hijack another car shortly afterwards.

The men were confronted by gardaí at the scene of one of the hijackings, arresting one man. A second man was arrested a short time later.

A firearm has been recovered from a field in the area. One garda received minor injuries during the incident.

The two men in custody, who are in their 20s, are being held at Enniscorthy and Gorey garda stations.
