The freedom of Cork City has been bestowed on President Michael D Higgins at a ceremony presided over by the city's Lord Mayor and city council.

President Higgins was honoured in recognition of his 34 years as a member of the Oireachtas and for his work in advancing civil rights and social justice.

President Higgins said he was honoured to become a Freeman of Cork, a city which he said had a unique cultural heritage.
