Twelve people have been arrested in a garda operation targeting organised crime in the southeast of the country.

Operation Munster targeted a specific organised crime gang involved in burglaries across Tipperary, Kilkenny and Waterford.

A total of 42 residential premises were searched and property including jewellery and electronic equipment was seized.

Those arrested are being held in various garda stations. Two of the 12 have since been released.

Gardaí said a number of people had their bank accounts frozen in the lead-up to this morning's operation.

A number of legally held firearms, and quantities of jewellery, cash, electronic goods and other valuable items were stolen in the burglaries being investigated.

Eight shotguns have been recovered in the Clonmel area in recent weeks as part of the garda investigation.
