Two men have been arrested after an assault which left another man in a critical condition in hospital.

The man, who is in his early 20s, was assaulted at the Williamstown Halting Site in Waterford city.

It is understood he received a number of blows to his head and body.

He was brought by ambulance to Waterford Regional Hospital but has since been transferred to Cork University Hospital.

The injuries to his head are said to be very serious and his condition in the intensive care unit at the hospital is described as critical.

The two men, aged 22 and 20, were arrested separately around lunchtime at in Portlaoise  and in Co Offaly.

They are being detained in Waterford Garda station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
