Gardaí investigating the death of a 42-year-old man in Co Dublin last night are treating the case as a gang-related murder.

Michael Devoy, from Balbutcher Drive in Ballymun, was shot dead.

He had been released from prison two days ago and was wearing a bullet proof vest.

Mr Devoy's body was discovered after gardaí carrying out a routine patrol in the Bohernabreena area at around 10.30pm last night came across suspicious activity.

A car sped away from the scene and got away after being pursued for a time.

The patrol car returned to the original scene and found the body on the ground.

Initial reports suggest the man had been shot in the head and sustained a number of other injuries to his upper body.

Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis visited the scene and carried out a preliminary examination.

The body was removed to Tallaght Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow morning.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area of the Foxhill Road /Bohernabreena Road between 10pm and 11pm yesterday to contact them.

They are also asking anyone who may have seen a silver coloured car in the area or any unusual activity to contact gardaí at Tallaght on 01-6666000, the Garda Confidential Line 1800-666-111 or any garda station.
