Deteriorating weather conditions have forced the bulk cargo ship the Abuk Lion to drop anchor at the entrance to Cork Harbour.

The tug boat, the Celtic Isle, which towed her for over 12 hours, will remain alongside overnight.

The 108-metre ship, which was escorted into the habour by the LE Roisin, will remain anchored at Ringabella Bay until the morning.

It will then move to the deep water berth at Ringaskiddy.

The ship's engine, which failed yesterday, will undergo assessment over the coming days.

All 13 crew on board the bulk carrier and the seven men on board the tug boat the Celtic Isle are said to be fine after overnight sea conditions described by the Irish Coastguard as very challenging.

The carrier, which is fully laden with bauxite, was en route from Aughinish in Co Limerick to St Petersburg in Russia when it got into difficulty.

The 108-metre vessel radioed for help about 33 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale yesterday afternoon.
