The Health Service Executive is to get a supplementary health budget of €199m, due to its overspending this year.

The joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children will discuss the supplementary funding on Thursday.

The extra funding was discussed at Cabinet today.

Health Minister James Reilly said he had predicted that the additional funding required by the HSE would not exceed €200m and this had been proven correct.

The minister said the overrun represented 1.5% of the overall health budget and was the result of rigorous control of spending.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet is to consider the Health Service Executive service plan next week.

There had been speculation ministers would consider the document, which will outline how health services will be affected by cutbacks and economies next year, at today's meeting.
