An 80-year-old man who went missing from a Co Galway nursing home has been found safe and well.

Frank Helly was found in a wooded area off the Tullykyne Road around 300 metres from Moycullen Nursing Home.

An extensive search operation was launched after Mr Helly was reported missing on Sunday evening.

He has been taken to University Hospital Galway for a medical check-up.

Mr Helly's family have expressed their gratitude to the huge number of people in Co Galway who assisted in the search.

His son Michael said members of the emergency services, rescue personnel and local volunteers had put in a huge effort to find his father.

He paid special tribute to people from Moycullen and surrounding areas who had given their time to assist.

Local man Charlie O'Malley, who found Mr Helly, said he had been searching in dense undergrowth when he noticed the man. He raised his hand and called out for assistance.

Garda Superintendent Noel Kelly said it was a "mighty result". He also thanked those involved in the search in recent days.
