Four Irish citizens being detained in Egypt were visited by members of their family earlier this week, according to Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Gilmore said that officials from his department had met the Halawa siblings on several occasions.

A further meeting with them is due to take place later this week.

Sisters Omaima, 20, Fatima, 22, Somaia, 27, and their 17-year-old brother Ibrahim have been detained since last month in Cairo.

They were trapped in the al-Fateh mosque after taking part in a protest. The four had their detention extended by 15 days at a hearing last weekend, Mr Gilmore said.
