Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney has said there has been no discussion in Cabinet on the issue of cutting the State pension.

Mr Coveney’s denials followed reports in today's Sunday Independent that cuts to the State pensions are among the measures being considered for October's budget.

“I’m not going to speculate on the Budget now,” he said in an interview with RTÉ News.

“All I’ll say is the reports of a cut to the State pension is something that, as a Cabinet minister, I’ve heard nothing of, and I suspect there really isn’t very much substance to that story.”
