The Blaine brothers died at their Castlebar home nine days ago

A man charged with the murders of two elderly brothers in Castlebar, Co Mayo, last week has been remanded in custody following a court appearance.

Alan Cawley, 26, with an address at Corrimbla, Ballina, appeared at Harristown District Court.

Mr Cawley is charged with the murders of Jack and Tommy Blaine at their home on New Antrim Street, Castlebar, nine days ago.

Before he was led away, the accused raised his hand in a gesture of greeting to his parents, who were in the public gallery.

He was remanded in custody to appear again in court on 16 August.
