A new record price at auction has been set in Dublin for Irish artist Paul Henry.

The painting entitled Potato Diggers, a large canvass of a man and woman digging in a West of Ireland landscape, achieved a hammer price of €400,000.

The buyers were an Irish family who live abroad.

They will pay just under €500,000 once taxes and auctioneer fees are included.

The previous record hammer price for a Paul Henry painting was €300,000.

The auction was held at Adam's Salerooms on St Stephen's Green.

The Potato Diggers was painted in Achill in 1910/11 and the two figures have been identified as Michael and Margaret Toolis, who Henry got to know on his first trip to Ireland in 1910.

It had a pre-sale estimate of between €250,000 and €350,000.
