Two men being questioned as part of the investigation into the murder of former detective John Kerins last year have been released without charge.

Mr Kerins was shot dead at his house at Cornaveagh near Bailieborough in Co Cavan last November.

The two men in their 30s were arrested on Monday and questioned by gardaí at Carrickmacross Garda Station.

The former detective garda had been questioned about the disappearance of a neighbour, Gerard Daly.

Mr Daly vanished two years ago and his disappearance is being treated as murder.

Gardaí yesterday ended their dig at the back of the house where Mr Kerins had lived as part of their search for the remains of Mr Daly.
