Commemorations are taking place around the country to mark the 97th anniversary of the Easter Rising.

The State ceremony on Dublin's O'Connell Street saw over 350 Defence Force personnel take part.

The ceremony saw hundreds gather at the GPO as members of the Army, Navy and Air Corps commemorated those who died in the Easter Rising 97 years ago.

The event was led by President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Justice Equality and Defence Alan Shatter.

Among those in attendance was Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.

The proclamation was read by Captain Eoin Rochford on the steps of the GPO while President Higgins laid a wreath.

A minute's silence was observed.

The ceremony finished with a fly-by featuring four PC9 aircraft from the Air Corps.
