A garda was stabbed in the hand during an incident at Cork Marts near Fermoy last night.

A man, aged in his 60s, drove a truck across the entrance to the mart at Corrin at around 6pm.

Gardaí were called to the scene and the man agreed to move the truck.

However, it is understood he then tried to block the road when cars started to leave the mart at around 8pm.

A garda who stood in front of the truck was knocked to the ground. He tried to take the keys from the truck’s ignition, but was stabbed in the hand.

The man was arrested and taken to Fermoy Garda Station.

It is believed the garda suffered a serious injury to his hand and was treated at Cork University Hospital.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The man involved in the incident is being assessed in hospital.
