A man in his 50s has been injured in a pipe bomb explosion in Co Offaly.

The man suffered injuries to his upper body in the blast, which occurred in Shinrone at around 3pm.

He was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore where his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone with information on the incident, or who may have witnessed anything suspicious in the Shrinrone, Roscrea Road areas this afternoon to contact Birr Garda Station on 057 9169710 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
