All residents on Inis Oírr are to be offered TB screening in the coming days, after the HSE confirmed an outbreak of the disease.

The risk of transmission is considered low, but as a precaution all islanders will be offered a test to check for the presence of tuberculosis.

Every household on the island has been sent a letter inviting residents to attend a clinic next week.

An information meeting will be held on the island next Monday before the testing programme.

Director of Public Health for HSE West Dr Diarmuid O'Donovan said it was important to try to restrict the spread of the tuberculosis and screening the full population was the best way to do this.

About 250 residents will be offered a skin test for TB and further screening, including X-rays, will be provided, if required.
