A council worker has died after an accident occurred while he was clearing ditches in Douglas, Cork.

The accident, at a water services site on Carr's Hill, happened just before 2pm.

It is understood the worker was injured when he was struck by a pole, which was knocked over during clearance work. He was removed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

Cork County Council and the Health and Safety Authority are investigating.

In a statement, Cork County Council said it is deeply shocked and distressed at the tragic accident which claimed the life of one of its employees and extended its sincere sympathy to his wife and family.
