Up to 2,000 people attended the funeral of murdered nanny Aoife Phelan in Co Laois this afternoon.

The 30-year-old from Cashel, Ballyroan, Co Laois, was murdered shortly after leaving a friend's house in Portlaoise on 25 October.

Speaking at the funeral mass at St Patrick's Church in Ballyroan, Fr Gerard Ahern commended Ms Phelan's mother Betty, father Michael and 11 siblings on their dignity in recent weeks.

Fr Ahern said Ms Phelan had been a keen soccer and rugby fan, a talented artist with a love of music and "a beautiful caring daughter and sister".

He thanked the community of Ballyroan and paid tribute to the gardaí, in particular the liaison officer appointed to the family.

Ms Phelan was laid to rest at St Patrick's Cemetery following funeral mass at 2pm.
