A 27-year-old man has died after being shot in Portarlington in Co Laois.

The incident, which is believed to be gang-related, took place in the Kilnacourt Woods estate at approximately 8.30am.

Gerard Eglington, who was originally from Dublin, was shot several times in front of his two children, an infant and an 11-year-old girl.

He was taken to Tullamore General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Mr Eglington was known to gardaí and had previously served time in prison for his role in a 2002 car crash in which two members of An Garda Síochána died.
