A father and daughter have appeared in court in relation to the discovery of drugs at two addresses in Co Kilkenny last week.

Leo Hayden, 50, from Assumption Place in Kilkenny city and his daughter Melissa Hayden, 20, from Ayrfield, Lord Edward Street, Kilkenny, were brought before a special sitting of Kilkenny District Court this afternoon.

Both were arrested on Thursday night and charged last night by gardaí from the National Drugs Unit.

Leo Hayden is charged with the possession, for the purposes of sale or supply, of cocaine and cannabis with an estimated street value of €1.5m.

Melissa Hayden is charged with the possession for sale or supply of €399,000 worth of cannabis.

There was no application for bail on the part of Mr Hayden and he was remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill prison this Wednesday.

Melissa Hayden was remanded in custody with consent to bail, on two independent sureties of €10,000 each.

However, the court heard she was not in a position to take up the bail immediately.
