An investigation has been launched after a 20-year-old man was beaten with a hammer and stabbed in Cork city last night.

The man, who is from Togher, was attacked in the Mardyke area and suffered a hammer blow to the head and a minor stab wound to the arm.

Gardaí believe he was attacked by five men who got out of a grey van and approached him around 10pm.

Gardaí were quickly on the scene and spoke to a number of men they believe were involved in the incident but no arrests were made

The injured man was rushed to Cork University Hospital where he was treated for his injuries which are understood not to be life-threatening.

The man spoke to gardaí before he was taken to hospital, but they hope to speak to him later today in more detail.

Gardaí are investigating whether the assault may be linked to an incident on Tuesday when the same man was attacked by a group of men on Farranferris Avenue.

On that occasion, the man suffered injuries to his face and legs when he was beaten with an iron bar, hammer and hurley.
