The boy who was injured in a suspected pipe bomb explosion in Co Wicklow has lost a number of his fingers.

The five-year-old picked up the device near his house at Sycamore Drive, Newtownmountkennedy at around 8.30am.

He was taken to Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin where he  underwent surgery after receiving hand, arm and facial injuries.

He is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

Gardaí in Bray are leading the investigation and are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The scene has been cordoned off and forensic examinations have been carried out.

Gardaí have yet to establish why the device was placed in Sycamore Drive and said they are questioning a number of people.

They have appealed to anyone who was in the Sycamore Drive area between 9pm last night and 8am to contact them.

Gardaí are also asking anyone in the Newtownmountkennedy area who may have noticed any unusual or suspicious activity overnight or in the last number of weeks to contact them at Bray Garda Station on 01 666 5300.
