An explosive device has been thrown at a police vehicle in Derry.

The incident happened as police were conducting drug-related searches in the Rathmore Park area.

Significant blast damage was caused to the vehicle, but no-one was injured.

A police spokesman said those who carried out the attack have shown callous disregard for the safety of the local community.

Inspector Jon Burrows said it was only by sheer good fortune that no one was killed as the attack occurred in a built-up residential area.
