Gardaí say they are following a definite line of inquiry in their investigation into the murder of a man following a house party in Cavan.
Ciaran O'Connell, 22, died today as a result of injuries sustained in the attack over the weekend.
Mr O'Connell had gone to the party at a rented house in his home village of Mullagh on the night of St Patrick's Day.
As the celebrations continued into the morning an altercation occurred and he was viciously assaulted.
Mr O'Connell, who was from the village, was rushed to Cavan General Hospital before being transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where he died early this morning.
Tonight, gardaí confirmed they have begun a murder investigation after they received the results of the post mortem carried out on his remains by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy.
Supt Gerry O'Brien of Bailieborough Garda Station, who is leading the investigation, said they had interviewed those who were at the party and were following a definite line of inquiry.
However, he reiterated his appeal for anyone with information or anyone who met Mr O'Connell during St Patrick's Day to contact them.
