Up to 1,500 homes in west Limerick will be without water from 9pm tonight until 7am tomorrow after oil entered the River Deel.

Limerick County Council will be restricting the water supply in parts of west Limerick overnight after oil entered the river from a commercial property.

Senior Engineer Donal Brennan explained: "Limerick County Council decided to restrict the water supply following an incident that resulted in a volume of kerosene entering the River Deel.''

He said the Council had also ceased production at the Shannon Estuary Area Water Supply Plant in Askeaton until the pollution incident has passed.

Mr Brennan said that "the Council is continuing efforts to minimise the impact of the pollution incident on the River.''

The Environment Section of Limerick County Council is said to be investigating the matter.
