A murder investigation is expected to be launched by gardaí in Bandon in west Cork after the body of a man was recovered from the River Bandon.

The body of a 27-year-old man was recovered last night.

The man has been named as Jonathan Duke, a father of one.

This evening, gardaí have issued an appeal to a man, believed to have been in O'Callaghan's Flats when an altercation broke out, to contact them.

Gardaí found the body after responding to an emergency call made just after 11pm.

The caller said a man was seen being thrown into the river close to the Bandon bridge near the centre of the town.

Gardaí went to the scene and recovered the body of the man a short time later.

He was pronounced dead by a doctor and taken to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination is being conducted.

The results are not expected before midnight.

It is understood there were a number of injuries on his body.

A man and a woman in their 30s have been arrested.

Two scenes have been preserved for technical examination and gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 023-8852200.
