A man and a woman in their late 20s have been arrested in Limerick city this afternoon in relation to an assault which has left a man with serious injuries.

The incident broke out in a laneway off Parnell St in the centre of the city at around 3pm.

A group of people got involved in a scuffle behind a store in the street, and a 33-year-old man received a stab wound to the neck.

He has been taken to the Mid Western Regional hospital in Limerick where he is described as critical but stable.

Gardaí arrested a man and a woman shortly after the incident, and they are being held at Roxbora and Henry street stations for questioning about the assault.
