A 51-year-old man has appeared in court in Luton and charged as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged slavery offences at an Irish travellers' site near Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

Tommy Connors (senior) is charged with 11 offences of conspiracy to place people in servitude or forced labour.

He was remanded in custody to appear in court again on 5 December.

The charges follow a police raid at the Green Acres site, Great Billington, on 11 September when 24 men were found living in cramped conditions in caravans, sheds and horse boxes.

Six other members of the Connors family have already been charged in connection with the investigation and are also due in court again on 5 December.

More than 200 officers were involved in raids on the Green Acres site last month, during which weapons, drugs and money were also uncovered.

Police believe some of the men appeared to have been "recruited" from soup kitchens and benefits offices and may have had problems such as alcoholism.
