Less than one in ten elderly people were at risk from poverty in 2009 compared to one in four in 2004, according to figures from the CSO.
The figures also show the consistent poverty rate for the elderly fell from 3.9% in 2004 to 1.1% in 2009.
This report from the Central Statistics Office focused on the income of those aged 65 and over in 2004 and 2009, the most recent year data was available.
It showed that in 2009 the "at risk of poverty" rate was 9.6%, down from 27.1% in 2004.
During the five years, weekly income increased from €289.05 in 2004 to €428.86.
In 2009, almost 86% of the elderly population described their themselves as ‘retired’ or on ‘home duties’, whilst 9% of the elderly population described themselves as ‘at work’.
