A Norwegian-owned yacht, which had been at the centre of an air and sea search off the West coast, has arrived safe and well at Portmagee, Co Kerry, this afternoon.

The Golden Eagle, with a crew of two on board, a 69-year-old Norwegian and a 60-year-old New Zealander, set out from Bermuda on 15 August and coastguard services there and in Ireland became concerned when it failed to arrive at Crookhaven, Co Cork, where it was due last week.

An extensive air and sea search failed to locate the 32-foot boat but this afternoon it sailed into Portmagee and dropped anchor in the harbour at 3pm.

A spokesman for Valencia coastguard said it had made radio contact with the boat and would be trying to establish this evening if it had experienced any difficulty during its transatlantic crossing.
