Gardaí in Roscommon are investigating the death of a 49-year-old woman who was fatally stabbed in a housing estate in the town.

Gardaí were called to the Abbeytown area in Co Roscommon shortly after 2.30pm and found the woman, who had multiple stab wounds, lying on the road outside her home.

Medical assistance was rendered by an ambulance team and a local doctor but she was pronounced dead shortly before 4pm.

Her body was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe where a post mortem examination will take place.

A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene and is being detained at the Garda Station in the town.

The house and the area where the stabbing took place were sealed off for a full technical examination.

Gardai heading up the investigation said they have not yet established if the woman was attacked in her home or if the fatal stabbing took place on the road outside.

A spokesman said the woman's death is being treated as murder and that they were following a definite line of enquiry.

He said they were not seeking to interview anyone else in connection with the woman's death at this time but would like to hear from anybody who was in the Abbeytown area of Roscommon between 2pm and 2.30pm today.
