A 19-year-old man has died after being shot earlier today in Inchicore, Dublin.

Paul Mc Carthy, from Myra Close, Inchicore was shot in a house a few doors away from his home.

He was in a back room with a number of other people when he was shot once in the head with a handgun.

Those in the house at the time he was shot fled.

Mr McCarthy was taken to St James's Hospital, where he died at around 7pm this evening.

A gun was dropped nearby at the junction of Emmet Road and is currently being examined by ballistics experts.

Gardaí at Kilmainham have begun a murder inquiry and have appealed for witnesses to contact Kilmainham Garda Station on 01-666 9700 or the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-666-111.

They suspect two gunmen may have been involved in the shooting and they are also searching for the others who were in the house at the time.
