The Minister for Defence has not ruled out further barracks closures during the lifetime of the Government.

Alan Shatter said the consolidation of the Defence Forces operations into a smaller number of locations was a key objective.

Mr Shatter said consideration may be given to the closure of further barracks.

The Minister made the comments as he answered questions in the Dáil this afternoon.

He denied the existence of a list of potential barracks closures, but said there was an overall review being conducted to ensure the best use of resources available to the forces.

Responding to Fianna Fáil's Dara Calleary, the Minister said the proceeds of barracks sales would be reinvested in the Defence Forces.

He confirmed that €85m had been raised from the sale of seven barracks.
